Applications
How this calculation is used
Building design
Screen VFD turndown, motor power, and control-range assumptions before manufacturer-curve selection.
Construction
Evaluate the likely effect of sheave or speed changes during TAB and startup.
Commissioning
Compare measured changes in airflow, pressure, and power against the first-, second-, and third-power speed relationships.
Quality controls
Assumptions and limitations
Assumptions
- Same fan geometry and wheel diameter.
- Similar system and operating region.
- Constant air density unless separately corrected.
- Shaft power is used consistently.
Limitations
- Does not replace a fan curve.
- Does not predict stall, system effect, motor/VFD limits, leakage, or control instability.
- Large speed changes reduce confidence.
Field use
Verification procedure
- Stabilize the system at each operating point.
- Measure actual fan RPM, airflow, pressure, and true motor input power.
- Keep damper positions and system configuration documented.
- Compare trends and manufacturer data before concluding.
Common engineering mistakes
- Using motor nameplate horsepower as measured shaft power.
- Mixing fan static and fan total pressure.
- Assuming VFD command percentage equals actual fan speed percentage.
