MechanicalIntermediatePumps

Pump Power and Energy Calculator

Estimate pump electrical input power, operating energy, and energy-consumption cost from flow, head, efficiencies, and runtime.

Why it matters: Hydraulic power, shaft power, motor input, energy, and utility cost are separate quantities.

Engineering interpretation

Estimated input power is 10.92 kW. At 4000 hours and $0.12/kWh, consumption is 43670 kWh with estimated energy cost $5240.

Important limitations

  • This estimate excludes VFD losses, demand charges, fixed fees, time-of-use periods, changing load, staging, controls, taxes, and other tariff terms.

Motor-driven equipment

Estimate electrical demand and energy use

Use nameplate information and an operating schedule to screen motor input power, current, annual energy, and operating cost. Results update automatically.

Optional companion calculation
Choose the motor nameplate output-power convention.
Rated shaft output, not electrical input.
Used to estimate current; it does not change the hp-based energy result.
Use efficiency at the evaluated load point when available.
Use measured or defensible operating load rather than motor nameplate size alone.
Used only for the estimated current calculation.
Assumes all selected motors operate concurrently at the entered load.
Replace the profile with the actual occupied, process, or control schedule.
$/kWh
Use the applicable marginal utility energy charge; demand charges are not included.

Horsepower is converted using 1 hp = 0.7457 kW. This estimate assumes steady average load and the entered operating-point efficiency. Voltage and power factor affect estimated current, but hp, load, efficiency, quantity, and schedule establish the energy estimate. VFD speed profiles, cycling, standby power, demand charges, and process variation require separate evaluation.

Whyd,hp = QH·SG/3960
Whyd,kW = 0.745699872Whyd,hp
Wshaft = Whyd/ηp
Win = Wshaft/ηm
E = Win·t
C = E·R
Current substitution

Win = 7.532/(75/100)/(92/100) = 10.92 kW; E = 10.92×4000 = 43670 kWh; C = 43670×0.12 = $5240.

Calculation sequence

Step-by-step method

  1. Calculate hydraulic output power from flow, head, and specific gravity.
  2. Divide by pump and motor efficiencies to estimate electrical input.
  3. Multiply input power by operating hours and the entered energy rate.
